Palm Kernel Oil vs Palm Oil: What Is the Difference?

Palm kernel oil and palm oil begin with the same fruit. Their difference lies within it: one comes from the kernel, the other from the surrounding flesh. Understanding that distinction offers a closer look at an ingredient at the heart of Zarenva.

One fruit, two distinct oils

Palm oil is extracted from the fleshy pulp of the oil palm fruit. Palm kernel oil comes from the seed enclosed within its hard shell. As the Food and Agriculture Organization explains, these are distinct oils with different compositions.

On an ingredient list, the words “palm” and “palm kernel” therefore matter. They identify different materials, even though both originate from the oil palm.

Where shea butter fits

Shea butter has a separate botanical origin. It comes from the kernels of the shea tree’s fruit, rather than the oil palm. In a body or hair butter, shea and palm kernel oil can be brought together as part of a wider blend.

Our shea heritage story explores the people and preparation behind that ingredient.

The kernel in Zarenva’s first collection

Palm kernel oil connects our first collection to West African ingredient traditions. Alongside shea butter and supporting oils, it forms part of the body and hair care concepts we are developing in Canada.

For Velvet Nourish Body Butter, our focus is a rich, whipped texture and a comfortable body-care ritual. For Silk Nourish Hair & Scalp Butter, we are exploring a rich finishing texture used sparingly through the lengths and ends. Explore the ingredient stories and follow the first collection as we prepare for its planned 30 November 2026 launch.

Look at the complete formula

A highlighted ingredient is a useful introduction. The full ingredient list, intended use and application directions tell you more about the finished product. Consider the texture you enjoy, whether fragrance suits your preferences, and how a product fits into your existing routine.

Origin, people and responsibility

We want the people and knowledge behind ingredient preparation to remain visible in the Zarenva story. Place of origin is one part of that story; traceability and sourcing practices deserve their own attention. We will share sourcing details as they are confirmed.
