At the forest's edge, care begins. Palm kernel oil comes from the seed inside the oil palm fruit, not its red pulp. After the fruit pulp is removed, dried nuts are cracked. The kernels are sorted, washed, and dried. Over a small fire, the dried kernels are gently roasted, then pounded into a rich paste. Clean water and careful heating release the oil. It rises to the surface and is skimmed away. The collected oil is clarified, filtered, and left to cool. In skin care, this emollient helps soften and smooth. Careful formulation and quality checks come next. Zarenva. Feel the story.

01 / The origin

What is palm kernel oil?

Palm kernel oil comes from the seed inside the oil palm fruit. Palm oil comes from the fleshy fruit around it. They are different oils, with different characteristics in a formula.

Palm kernel oil vs palm oil

The key distinction is the part of the fruit used: the kernel for palm kernel oil, and the surrounding flesh for palm oil. An ingredient name matters when you read a cosmetic label; the two names are not interchangeable.

02 / In our formulas

Why it matters to Zarenva.

Alongside shea butter, palm kernel oil is one of the ingredients at the heart of our developing body and hair care collection: Velvet Nourish Body Butter and Silk Nourish Hair & Scalp Butter.

It can contribute to a blend’s consistency and feel. The finished experience depends on the complete formula.

When skin feels dry or rough

Velvet Nourish Body Butter is being developed with a softer, smoother skin feel in mind. Shea butter, palm kernel oil and supporting oils shape the rich, whipped texture we are working towards for people who find lighter lotions less satisfying.

When hair lengths and ends feel dry

Silk Nourish Hair & Scalp Butter is being developed for a softer, smoother finish through the lengths and ends. Our proposed ritual uses small amounts, adjusted to your hair, to help avoid a heavy, coated feel.

Both butters reflect Zarenva's approach to rich, considered body and hair care. Discover the ingredients behind each ritual below.

03 / The people

Care begins with people.

Our sourcing story includes women in West Africa who help bring these ingredients to us. Sharing that work is part of how we want you to get to know Zarenva.
