Palm Kernel Oil in Skincare: Heritage, Softness and Hair Care

THE ROOTS OF ZARENVA | INGREDIENT JOURNAL

Some ingredients are familiar long before their stories are widely told. Palm kernel oil is one of them. Used in traditional body care in parts of West Africa and valued today by cosmetic formulators, this plant-derived oil has a distinctive composition and an important place in Zarenva's ingredient story.

At Zarenva, we honour the Nigerian heritage of palm kernel oil and celebrate its distinctive place in thoughtful skin and hair care.

First, palm kernel oil is not the same as palm oil

Both come from the oil palm (Elaeis guineensis), but from different parts of its fruit. Palm oil is extracted from the fleshy fruit, while palm kernel oil comes from the seed inside. Their fatty-acid profiles are different, and so are their roles in formulation. For a closer look, read our guide to palm kernel oil versus palm oil.

What makes palm kernel oil interesting to formulators?

Palm kernel oil is particularly rich in saturated fatty acids, including lauric and myristic acids. That composition helps explain its characteristic texture and relatively good resistance to oxidation compared with many more unsaturated oils. The complete formula, processing, packaging and storage together shape the finished product's stability.

1. An emollient for a softer skin feel

In skincare, an emollient helps skin feel softer and smoother. Published reviews discuss palm kernel oil's moisturizing and skin-conditioning properties. In a body butter, palm kernel oil works with other ingredients to help create a rich, skin-conditioning texture.

2. A thoughtful addition to hair care

Plant oils can help give hair a conditioned feel, improve slip and add shine. Palm kernel oil has been explored in hair-care formulations for these reasons.

3. A different role from shea butter

Why combine plant-derived ingredients instead of relying on just one? Because each brings different characteristics. At Zarenva, palm kernel oil is a signature part of our African-rooted formulation story. Shea butter and carefully selected complementary ingredients also contribute to the texture, spread, finish and overall sensory experience of our butters.

Heritage is our inspiration. Careful formulation is our practice.

We source palm kernel oil from Nigeria, where the ingredient has a meaningful connection to local knowledge and traditions. Zarenva brings that heritage into a contemporary Canadian skincare setting, focusing on considered ingredients and the way they work together.

Our goal is to create thoughtfully formulated skincare and share the heritage, ingredients and craftsmanship behind each ritual.
